Jazz

Our leveled jazz classes for Primary 1 level and up explore fun and energy-filled combinations involving the basics of different jazz techniques to many styles of music.

As students progress through the levels, they will hone in on the various sub-styles and learn to articulate movement with sharp and smooth contrast.  Dancers are challenged with intricate combinations and working arms and legs simultaneously in new and creative patterns. Floor work will be intertwined with stationary and traveling movement, and improvisation will become a routine part of class.

Primary 1

Ballet, Tap, and Jazz

6 - 10 yrs

This class expands on the skills introduced in KinderCombo ballet & tap level and introduces children to jazz dance. More steps, formations, and dance terms are incorporated. The use of the ballet barre is introduced, and dancers are challenged with longer combinations. At this level, Tap is offered as a separate, focused class (Primary Tap 1/2- hybrid level) and is highly recommended to continue tap dance education.

Performances:
- All students in this class participate in our Nutcracker related rehearsals and performances
December Nutcracker (auditions Friday, October 7th- everyone is cast!)
- Class performs 2 dances (ballet & jazz) in our June Showcase/recital.

Primary 2

Ballet, Tap, and Jazz

8 - 12 yrs

The Primary 2 level is the first where all core styles (ballet, jazz, tap) are divided into their own classes.

The Primary 2 level explores all parts of ballet class- barre work, center, leaps, turns, and classical repertoire. These classes provide dancers the opportunity to build up and then refine their foundational skills, develop more fluidity and grace, and quick feet and a faster paced class, in preparation for the Upper School. With the continuation of proper ballet technique, eligible students at least 9-years-old have the opportunity to take part in more rigorous Ballet training, with the option of  joining Ballet Intensive as an Apprentice.

Dancers also acquire a greater knowledge of Tap and Jazz technique, with more complex combinations, floor work, new rhythms and ways to interpret the music. All 3 dance styles have a choreographed piece in the Showcase. All Primary 2 students also participate in our annual Nutcracker with the opportunity of multiple roles.

Upper Level 1/2

10+ yrs

Intended for dancers who have completed the Primary levels, or older students who are newer to dance. This Jazz class expands into leaps, turns, and traveling steps with directional changes. Body Isolations and basic floorwork are introduced.

**Dancers must also enroll in ballet for their specific level/skill

Upper Level 3

13+ yrs

This is our most advanced jazz class, intended for late middle-high schoolers. Students will hone in on the various sub-styles and learn to articulate movement with sharp and smooth contrast. Dancers are challenged with intricate combinations and working arms and legs simultaneously in new and creative patterns. Floor work will be intertwined with stationary and traveling movement, and improvisation will become a routine part of class. This class dances in one Showcase (recital) dance in June.

**Dancers must also enroll in ballet for their level/skill.
